Compassion International: Releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name Sponsoring children in need is breaking the cycle of poverty. Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty, and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. Allow God to work through you when you sponsor a child.

When a child finds out they’ve been sponsored, the joy they feel is indescribable. Just knowing that someone across the globe cares means more than you can imagine. Sponsoring a child will profoundly change the future for your child — and will change your own life in the process.

Give a child hope for the future — and for all eternity. Sponsor a child today!

Your donation of just $32 per month connects your child with a loving, church-based program that provides:

  • Educational opportunities
  • Critical health care
  • Safe and healthy recreation
  • Social development
  • Opportunities to know Christ and grow in faith
  • … and if it matters to you, your donation is tax-deductible

If you want to see more first-hand experiences of what Compassion does, check out some of these bloggers (full list) who are in Uganda from February 11-18.

Stand guard. Stand fast. Stand strong.

This is something that Prodigal Jon posted, and some think it’s worth spreading. With all the violence and unrest destroying the country of Kenya, we are seeing Christians and those who are trying to make a positive difference in, and defend the lives of those who cannot defend themselves, being intentionally attacked with the goal of annihilation.

An orphanage in Kenya on an island in Lake Victoria is home to more than 300 kids, many of which were orphaned by the HIV epidemic, is without a doubt one of the most visceral representations of what it means to share God’s love.

And it might be burned down.

With violence destroying a country, the orphanage is in danger. There have been threats. Guards have been posted. The food supply delivered to the island is dwindling.

The following is the email the director of the orphanage filed from Kenya (1/30/2008):

Thanks to you and to all our fellow-servants who are in USA for lifting us and our bleeding country to the Lord. After receiving perhaps the most direct and serious threats from the mainlands, to the effect that we the only operating school in our region, I decided to call off my trip to Nairobi by the MAF plane which was coming to pick me. I called all staff and told them about the threats of those who were demanding that we close down or be burnt. I then gave each one room to say what in their view we needed to do and only two people were in favor of closure, with everyone else feeling strongly that we cannot release the children to all the dangers awaiting them outside of the orphanage. We will stay with the children.

Deep inside I am reminded once more that this place is the true home many of these precious jewels of the Lord have. I asked myself, ‘Should I send them out there in the wild, or should I continue God’s work even when it is risky?’ I chose the latter and all I ask for is not sympathy but prayer that God would put his arms around these tender lives. This evening our plea to be allowed to continue serving the orphans for the sake of Christ was aired on the radio. Mention was made of us by name that we should be spared the ordeals going on throughout our country by now.

Tonight the men will be working as guards of children, women and property as a response to the night attacks. We have no weapons but wholly rely on the Lord and the guarding angels of light. May the Lord bless and keep you.

I assume that PJ will continue updates on this situation … stay with Prodigal Jon for developments.

Thanks.

Ad agency helps to meet needs and make differences

Posted by Jamon Abercrombie on Jan 30, 2008 in Reaching Out

The ad agency in Kansas City (that I work for from St. Louis), PlattForm, formed a Philanthropic committee a few years ago. Since then, PlattForm has sent numerous of our 350+ employees to help support various charitable organizations around the KC Metro.

One of those organizations is SAVE, Inc - a shelter providing housing options for those living with HIV/AIDS.

Among the numerous Emmy’s, Telly’s, or Omni’s PlattForm’s production department garners each year, this year PlattForm’s production department won a prestigious Philly Award for Best Video Presentation - sponsored by the Council on Philanthropy.
